Fund raising

When the theatre was first established it was as the result of years of fund raising by a group of enthusiasts looking to establish a permanent home for amateur theatre groups in the locality. Colchester Borough Council have been constant supporters of Theatre Arts Action Trust and The Headgate, and when they identified potential premises, fundraising stepped into overdrive. The theatre was originally adapted during 2001 funded by:

  • A successful approach for Lottery Funding resulted in a grant of £99,663.
  • A local benefactor, The Hervey Benham Trust, generously gave us £70,000.
  • Fundraising, sponsorship and existing reserves raised a further £70,000

A list of the original sponsors can be found HERE

Our current premises have been actively managed to deliver our responsibility for maintaining a Grade 2 listed building to a high standard, whilst meeting our artistic objectives and generating income. Thus, when the opportunity to use part of the adjoining premises arose, financial prudence, and the generosity of former patron, David Forder, allowed the Trust to acquire a lease on that property. This helps us to address the continued demand for studio space and the shortage of backstage facilities, whilst improving facilities for disabled patrons and hirers.

If you are interested in sponsoring any aspect of the theatre’s work or in house productions, then please contact the Treasurer at

The bulk of our income comes from the hire of the theatre and the rehearsal spaces.
